The Silo Hotel GM Luis Pinheiro on Luxury, Design, Art, and Cape Town
The Silo Hotel is a city sanctuary that celebrates art, style, and design. This architectural landmark rises above the V&A Waterfront, defined by its iconic pillowed-glass windows and panoramic views stretching from Table Mountain to the harbour. The hotel spans six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), home to the largest collection of contemporary African art on the continent.
Luis Pinheiro is the General Manager of The Silo Hotel in Cape Town. His approach centres on thoughtful innovation, refined service standards, and preserving the property’s unique design legacy. He is known for elevating guest experiences through personalised touches and authentic cultural elements, while fostering a supportive, high-performing team. Committed to responsible luxury, Luis integrates community engagement and sustainability into daily operations and provides steady, practical leadership through the evolving landscape of the hospitality industry.
Defining True Luxury at The Silo Hotel
How do you define luxury at The Silo Hotel?
The fundamentals of luxury will always include generous spaces, high-quality linen, and exceptional amenities. But for me, true luxury is defined by the experience—how guests are welcomed, how they are cared for, and ultimately how we make them feel. It’s the emotional connection that elevates a stay from excellent to unforgettable.
What was the specific element of The Silo Hotel that first appealed to you?
Location is often cited as the most important factor in hospitality, and The Silo certainly has that advantage within the V&A Waterfront. But what truly drew me in was the building itself—its striking architectural design, its presence on the Cape Town skyline, and its position directly above Africa’s most significant art museum, with private access for guests. It’s a rare combination of culture, location, and design.
How do you ensure The Silo Hotel stands out from other luxury hotels?
Our connection to The Royal Portfolio—one of South Africa’s leading luxury hospitality brands—sets a foundation of excellence. From there, we differentiate ourselves through curated, highly personalised guest experiences and a team of passionate, knowledgeable professionals. These elements ensure The Silo consistently feels distinctive, both locally and globally.
Leadership, Mentorship, and Responsible Luxury
How do you mentor exceptional talent within your team?
With more than 40 years in hospitality and having received exceptional early mentorship at The Carlton Hotel, I believe strongly in hands-on guidance. Being present, working alongside people, and supporting them in real operational moments is the most effective form of mentorship. When your financial systems and structures are strong, it allows you to truly focus on developing the people who bring the guest experience to life.
How does The Silo Hotel integrate sustainability without compromising luxury?
We’re fortunate to be part of the V&A Waterfront precinct, which has world-leading sustainability targets and systems. Within that framework, we actively minimise food waste—redirecting where possible to local farmers—implement water-saving measures, and reduce linen and towel changes with guest participation. We also partner closely with the V&A to recycle effectively and ensure our water packaging is either glass or 100% compostable. The intention is simple: offer responsible luxury without diluting the guest experience.
What principles have consistently guided your leadership?
Be honest with yourself and with your team. Serve your guests and colleagues wholeheartedly, but never become subservient. Respect is earned through integrity and consistency.
Industry Strategy and Professional Evolution

What is one strategic action stakeholders could implement to boost tourism?
We work closely with FEDHASA, Wesgro, Cape Town Tourism, and other partners. Visa facilitation and increased airlift will always help, but for me, safety remains the most critical factor—for visitors, staff, and the community. Creating consistently safe environments is essential for long-term tourism growth.
Your advice for a luxury brand facing an online reputation challenge?
Respond with honesty and respect. If possible, take the conversation offline to resolve it more personally. Acknowledge errors where they exist, avoid defensiveness, and never be untruthful—but also don’t allow your team or brand to be unfairly targeted. Calm, transparent communication goes a long way.
How has your understanding of professional success evolved?
In the early days of my career, success was often measured by long hours and relentless work. Hard work matters, but I’ve learned that working smarter, collaborating, and sharing responsibility are far more sustainable—and ultimately more effective. Leadership today is about clarity, balance, and enabling others to grow.
What has the hospitality industry taught you about people?
Hospitality reveals both the best and the more challenging sides of human behaviour. What it has taught me, above all, is that many people simply need a second chance—and often do remarkable things when they’re given one.
